Planning tool
Moving timeline.
A phase-by-phase breakdown of when to do what — so your move stays on track from booking to unpacking.
Plan and book
This is the window to make your biggest decisions. Confirm your target move date, get quotes, and lock in your moving company. The earlier you book, the more scheduling flexibility you have — especially for summer or end-of-month dates.
- Set a target move date
- Get and compare moving quotes
- Book your crew and confirm your service scope
- Start researching utilities and services at the new address
Organize and prepare
Use this window to start packing non-essentials and handle the administrative side of your move. Utilities, change-of-address, and transferring services take time — starting here prevents scrambling later.
- Begin packing non-essential rooms
- Schedule utility transfers
- File USPS change of address
- Notify important contacts and institutions
Pack and confirm
Most of your home should be boxed by the end of this phase. Confirm all building access and logistics. Your "essentials box" — the things you will need immediately after arriving — should be set aside and labeled clearly.
- Finish packing all non-essential items
- Label boxes clearly with room and contents
- Confirm building access and elevator/parking rules
- Prepare your essentials box
Finalize details
This is the last check-in before move day. Confirm your crew details, make sure important documents are with you (not in a box), and walk through logistics one more time with everyone involved.
- Confirm move date and arrival window with VA Moving
- Disassemble large furniture if needed
- Set aside personal documents to carry
- Confirm destination access and parking
Execute
Your primary job on move day is to be present, communicate, and do a final walkthrough. Let the crew handle the heavy lifting. Make sure you check every room, closet, and outdoor area before you leave the origin.
- Be present or assign a clear point of contact
- Walk through every room before departure
- Note any concerns before signing off on delivery
- Confirm placement at destination
Settle in
Unpacking is its own project. Prioritize the rooms you use daily — bedroom and kitchen first. Handle the administrative close-out tasks over the first week so nothing is forgotten.
- Unpack bedroom and kitchen first
- Test all utilities and appliances
- Update DMV, voter registration, and financial accounts
- Review all moving paperwork and store receipts
